About Our Awards
HOW IT WORKS
Our Awards processes are nominations, and voting by members of the public. T he Black Women ArtistesAwards acknowledges and celebrates the achievements of Black women artistes, who perform the genres poetry, storytelling and song. T he ‘Nina Simone Award’ is awarded to an artiste for her contributions to Jazz. Both Awards presentations take place in London during the month of October.
Black Women in the Arts recognises the substantial contribution made by Black women artistes. These women artistes' influence in the UK is growing rapidly and their increased prominence in British culture and lifestyle is evident.
Black Women Artistes Awards are made to individual artistes for their contributions or achievements in the areas of Song, Poetry or Storytelling. The ‘Nina Simone Award’ is awarded to an artiste for her contributions to Jazz
All categories are open to Black women artistes 16 years and upwards, from the African Diaspora – British-Black, Black-African, Black-Caribbean
These awardsare open to Black women artistes who have been performing for two years or more.
NINA SIMONE AWARD CATEGORY
Nominations are welcome from members of the public, nominations must meet the criteria. Self-nomination is also welcome.
Artistes participating in the Festival of Black Female Voices (BWA annual event celebrating International Women’s Day), automatically receive nominations for the Black Women Artistes Awards.

When calling or emailing us, please remember to state ‘AWARDS’ in your message
This can be done by:
1. Visit our website for voting dates, and follow the online instructions for voting.
2. Telephoning 020 7923 7658, casting your vote. Recorded message will confirm voting dates.
Additionally Messages will be displayed on our website, ebulletin, Talkin Arts eMag and our email signature giving voting dates.
Note: Votes made by telephone will be transferred to the online voting system. This means that all nominated artistes must be registered on our online system.
Note: Voting require a Black Women in the Arts ‘Celebrity Membership’ account. Without this account, we can not effectively keep a record of your votes. Even more important, we can not display your profile online.
RULES FOR VOTING
All voters have one vote per category – when voting for artistes for the Black Women Artistes Awards voters will cast a vote for each category: Poetry, Storytelling and Song.
There is only one category for the Nina Simone Award – in this category voters must select their chosen artistes and cast only 1 vote. Multiply votes will automatically be disqualified.
IN THE EVENT OF A DRAW
A draw means that two or more artistes have the same equal number of votes. In this regard the Award Panel representative by, partner organisation, member of the public and a BWA Board member. The decision of the Award Panel is final.
Winners will receive the title of:
Black Women Artistes Award recipient, Singer, Poet or Storyteller
Nina Simone Award recipient
Record of winners will be published and then archived as part of each award history.
